Fair Trade Tourism Cer­ti­fi­ca­tion

The Fair trade tourism certification (FTT), supported by the Thematic portefolio Social Protection in Uganda, is about making sure that tourism benefits local communities, economies, and the environment in a fair and sustainable way. It focuses on ethical and responsible practices that promote social justice, empower local communities, and protect cultural and natural resources.

Due to its close link with fair wages, safe and healthy working conditions, job security, social protection, and respect for workers' rights, fair trade tourism promotes ethical practices that benefit workers and contribute to sustainable economic development.

In Uganda, it offers several advantages. It positions Uganda as a responsible tourism destination, appealing to conscientious travelers and gaining global recognition. FTT builds a foundation for sustainable tourism that benefits present and future generations by preserving natural and cultural heritage. It engages local communities in tourism, boosting their economic opportunities and ensuring fair employment and wages for marginalized groups like women, youth, and indigenous communities. Additionally, FTT provides travelers with socially responsible, eco-friendly, and culturally immersive experiences, enhancing their overall tourism experience.
