Summary

Enabel's initiative in Uganda's Rwenzori and Albertine regions marks a transformative step forward in nurturing decent work within the tourism and hospitality sectors. The project is dedicated to creating sustainable and dignified employment opportunities by addressing both on-the-job and off-the-job training needs. Targeting 750 youth and women, the apprenticeship skills development program stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment. T

hrough strategic partnerships with key stakeholders, including the Uganda Hotel Owners Association and the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, this initiative delivers a robust blend of technical and soft skills training to address immediate skills gaps, equips participants for successful careers, thereby paving the way for their professional advancement. Central to this project is its commitment to enhancing decent work principles. The training integrates modules on labor standards, gender considerations, and social dialogue to ensure that participants are not only informed about their rights but also empowered to engage in meaningful discussions on fair labor practices. This approach cultivates a supportive work environment and promotes inclusive economic growth.

Enabel’s promotion of Fair-Trade Tourism (FTT) certification further amplifies these achievements. The FTT framework champions fair wages, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability, ensuring that Uganda’s tourism development benefits local communities. With 27 FTT ambassadors trained and over 52 businesses registered, this initiative has gained widespread support and is poised to expand across the region. This will foster cooperation and drive inclusive economic development thereby creating more decent jobs.

This approach shows a holistic strategy for promoting decent work through addressing key challenges and harnessing the potential of tourism for equitable growth.
